the feels Film Club
Last week was the first of the feels Film Club and we had amazing time! My new film club is an intimate and informal space to watch and discuss my favourite films about relationships. Each film will explore the beauty, messiness and complexities of our relationships with others and ourselves.
Guests were given a drink on arrival, and then we screened the The Worst Person in the World at Shoreditch House’s screening room. The film is four years in the life of Julie, following her troubled love life and uncertain career path.Â
After the screening I was joined by journalist Vicky Spratt and writer Monica Heisey. We asked what it is about being on the cusp of thirty that brings up these famous questions. Are we asking them - or is it society pushing us to? We talked about how The Worst Person in the World subverts societal expectations and is a realistic portrayal of break ups.
Then we opened the floor up to the audience for a living room style discussion. We talked about how resolutions can feel false in art and the universally relatable story at the centre of this film. We discussed how it’s a great illustration that sometimes in life you must give clarity to yourself. The outside world, or others, won’t always resolve things for you. We talked about how when you are in a relationship with another person you’re always learning something about yourself. We discussed how many things in life can be true at once, and how The Worst Person in the World shows us that deferring decisions can be just as important as making them.
Each audience member had a different perspective of The Worst Person in the World which made for a lively discussion. It also proves the power of this kind of storytelling.
I can’t wait for the next one! More info early next year. Each screening has a number of spaces free to the feels readers on a first come first served basis. Paid subscribers receiving priority.Â
See you there!
