The biggest takeaway from my interview with Zawe Ashton

Last week I interviewed the incredible Zawe Ashton for the Guardian Saturday magazine. One of the biggest takeaways for me was her realisation that she was allowed to play a 'fun' role - she's currently starring in Mr Malcom's List, which is full-on Regency-Core and a world away from some of the more harrowing characters she has played.
The conversation centred partly on why we need moments of silliness. It's self-love! Stepping into a comedic role spoke to a more significant point around the idea that Black women are strong and can stomach endless amounts of pain, as though joy is not an emotion we deserve to revel in.
