Hey, Liv here. Thank you for signing up to my Substack.
A bit about me and this newsletter
I am probably most well-known for founding gal-dem, a publication set up to platform the work of creatives of colour from marginalised genders at 21. You might not know that alongside this, I started my career in television as a production trainee (I made a lot of tea) and eventually worked on documentaries about Mark Bolan (T-Rex) and The Truth About Sleep. I even spent a week on First Dates (though the less I say about that, the better).
As my career grew, I landed a gig working in digital factual commissioning at the BBC (alongside running gal-dem). And along the way, I have produced audio documentaries, written short stories, curated exhibitions, edited books and most recently have written a novel called Rosewater. My approach to work has been that change is good and through experimenting with creative expression, I should be able to figure out the best way to tell stories with heart about the people and places that matter to me the most.
This brings me to where I am now... After more than five years at the helm of gal-dem, in 2020, I returned to nurturing my creative practice (this included starting an MA, working as a writer in residence at BBC studios and taking part in the Filmononomics cohort for 2022). I've finally figured out what I want to be doing (for now at least!): writing - fiction, drama, comedy - basically anything that allows me to be creative and express myself without fear!
I watch and read a lot and hope this newsletter will become a space for sharing ideas, great shows, literature, magical beings and the things I've learnt from the significant relationships and transformative moments in my life.
